VOCABULARY FOR COLONIAL AMERICA

 

Lesson 2

Artifacts – small handmade objects, such as tools and clothes

Culture – everything; tools, crafts, language, beliefs, etc. - that

makes up a group’s way of life

Region – an area with particular geographic, social, etc, characteristics

 

Lesson 3

Settlement – small communities that are started in a new place

 

Lesson 5

Compact – agreement

 

Lesson 6

Colonies – places ruled by another country not by their own people.

Colonist – people who settle in colonies

Diverse – different from each other

Indentured Servant – individuals who agreed to work for a period of time in exchange for free passage from Europe

Plantation – large area of privately owned land where crops were grown with the labor of workers or slaves that lived on the land

 

Lesson 7

Slave – a person who is owned by and forced to work for another person

Triangular trade – trade route from Europe, Africa, to the colonies
